Disclaimer

Drive Toolkit publishes general information about garage equipment and vehicle care. Please read this page before you act on anything you find here.

The short version

The guides on this site are general information, not instructions for your specific vehicle, your specific tool, or your specific situation. We cannot see your garage, your hoist's condition, or the engine you are about to lift. You are the only one who can assess that, and you are responsible for deciding whether a job is within your ability and equipment.

If you are not confident, stop and get a qualified mechanic. There is no shame in it and it is cheaper than the alternative.

Why we are blunt about this

Most of what this site covers involves suspending several hundred pounds of iron in the air above people. When an engine hoist fails, it does not fail gently. A dropped block can crush a foot, a hand, or a chest, and it happens faster than you can move.

That is not a reason to avoid the work. It is a reason to respect it.

Rules that override anything we publish

If a guide on this site ever conflicts with any of the following, the guide is wrong. Follow these instead:

  • Your hoist's load chart and manufacturer's manual. Rated capacity depends on boom extension, and the ratings differ between models that look identical on the shop floor. Your chart is the authority. Ours is a general explanation.
  • Your vehicle's service manual for lift points, mounting points, torque specifications and drain procedures.
  • Never work, reach or rest under a suspended load. Not for a second. Use stands. A hydraulic ram holds a load right up until the moment a seal decides otherwise.
  • Inspect before every lift. A rated hoist with a weeping ram, a bent leg, a worn chain, or a cracked weld is not a rated hoist. Neither is one standing on broken, sloped or soft concrete.
  • Do not exceed the working limit to "just get it done." The margin you are eating into is the margin that stops the failure.

No professional relationship

Reading this site does not create a professional or advisory relationship between you and Drive Toolkit. Nothing here is a substitute for:

  • a qualified mechanic or automotive technician,
  • the manufacturer of your tool or vehicle,
  • a structural or lifting-equipment professional where the job calls for one.

For anything load-bearing, safety-critical, or beyond routine home maintenance, consult someone qualified who can inspect the actual job.

Accuracy and currency

We work to keep the information here accurate and current, and we correct errors when we find them or when readers report them — see our Editorial Policy for how corrections are handled. Even so:

  • Specifications, weights and capacities change between model years and revisions.
  • Prices, availability and product designs change without notice.
  • Figures given as ranges are estimates for planning, not guarantees for your exact unit.

We make no warranty that the information here is complete, accurate, current, or suitable for your particular purpose.

Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, Drive Toolkit and its operator accept no liability for any injury, death, property damage, vehicle damage, tool damage, or financial loss arising from the use of, or reliance on, information published on this site. You use this information at your own risk, and you accept responsibility for the work you choose to carry out.

Products and links

Any product mentioned on this site is discussed for information only. A mention is not a warranty of that product's fitness, safety, or suitability for your job, and it is not a recommendation to use it outside the manufacturer's stated limits. Our position on affiliate links is set out on the Affiliate Disclosure page.

Emergencies

If someone has been injured, stop and call your local emergency services immediately. Do not attempt to move a load off a trapped person by yourself if there is any way to get help — an uncontrolled release can make a crush injury worse.

Questions

If something on this site is unclear, unsafe, or wrong, please tell us — comments are open on every guide, and that is the surest way to reach us today. Reports that affect safety are treated as urgent.
