Short answer: it depends entirely on what your car's jack point physically is, and there are four common types. If your jack point is a bare pinch weld seam, a slotted pad is genuinely worth owning and it will save the seam from bending. If the factory already fitted a plastic or rubber block at that point, you may need nothing. If your car has a round lift pad receptacle, a generic slotted pad is the wrong shape and you need the model-specific puck that plugs into it. Why the usual answer is unsatisfying
Search this and you get a consistent verdict: technically optional, probably a good idea, protects the pinch weld. That is true and it stops one step short of useful, because it does not tell you which pad, and buying the wrong shape is worse than buying nothing.
The variable nobody names is that "jack point" describes at least four different physical interfaces. Identify yours first. It takes a minute with a flashlight.

Type 1: the bare pinch weld
This is the case the whole product category exists for. The seam is two panels of steel folded and welded together, and it is strong along its length and weak as an edge pressed into a flat plate.
A floor jack's saddle is broad, round and flat or shallow-dished. Put that against a thin folded edge and the entire load of one corner of the car goes into a couple of inches of seam. The seam bends.
A slotted pad fixes this by copying what the factory jack does. It has a groove cut across it. The seam drops into the groove, and the load is carried on the flat surfaces either side of it, spread across a much larger area. This is the same principle as the slotted lifting pad on the scissor jack in your trunk.
If your jack points are bare seams and you lift the car more than once or twice a year, buy one. It is one of the cheapest items in a garage and it prevents a problem that is annoying to fix. Type 2: the factory block
A lot of modern vehicles come with a molded plastic or hard rubber block already fitted at each jacking point, clipped or bonded to the seam. It is there for the same reason a slotted pad is: to give a jack somewhere to press that is not a bare edge.
If your car has these, the pad is already installed, and the practical questions change:
- Does your floor jack saddle sit flat on the block? Usually yes.
- Will a slotted pad fit over the block? Often not, because the block is wider than the groove. Forcing it is worse than using nothing.
- Are the blocks intact? They crack and they get knocked off, especially on older cars and cars that have been to a quick-service shop. A missing block means that corner is now a Type 1 point.
Replacement blocks are available for many vehicles and are usually inexpensive.
Type 3: the round lift pad receptacle
Some vehicles, including a good number of German models and several EVs, have a dedicated round or oval lifting pad location rather than a pinch weld, sometimes covered with a removable plug. These exist because the vehicle was designed to go on a two-post lift with a specific pad shape.
A generic slotted pad is the wrong shape here. The groove does nothing, and the pad can sit on the recess without locating in it, which is the worst combination: it looks right and it can slide.
The correct item is a puck made for that receptacle, which locates positively in the recess and cannot walk sideways. These are model-specific, sold as sets, and the reason to buy the right one is that this jack point type has no fallback if the pad shifts.
EVs deserve a specific caution. On a battery-under-the-floor car, the area around the designated point is not general-purpose structure. Placing a jack outside the designated location on those vehicles risks the battery enclosure, which is not a repair anybody wants to pay for and not a component to compromise. If your car is an EV or a plug-in hybrid, use the designated points and the designated pad shape, and check the manual rather than a forum.
Type 4: frame rails and axles
If you drive a body-on-frame truck or large SUV and you lift on the frame rail or on the solid rear axle, you are pressing a flat saddle against a flat, thick, structural surface. That is what the saddle is designed for.
A slotted pad is actively wrong here, because the groove reduces contact area on a flat surface, which is the opposite of what you want. A flat rubber pad is a reasonable option if you want to protect paint and undercoating and add a bit of grip. Bare saddle on a frame rail is a normal, accepted practice.
What a pad does not do

It does not make a jack a support. Nothing does. Hydraulic jacks lower under sustained load without warning, which is why a floor jack is not a support is the rule on this site that nothing overrides.
It does not fix a corroded jack point. If the seam is flaking, perforated or already badly deformed, spreading the load over a slightly larger area does not restore metal that is not there. That point needs to be avoided and an alternative structural point identified for your specific vehicle.
And it costs you lift height. This is the trade nobody mentions. A pad sits between the saddle and the car, so it uses up part of your jack's travel. On a jack that was already marginal on maximum lift for your vehicle, adding an inch of pad can be the difference between getting a stand under the car and not. The hockey puck question
It comes up in every forum thread on this subject: people use hockey pucks as jack pads.
The appeal is obvious. They are hard rubber, they are the right rough size, and they are cheap. The problem is that a plain puck is not slotted, so on a pinch weld it does exactly what a bare saddle does, only with a rubber layer. The seam still concentrates load in a line. Some people cut a groove into one, which addresses the geometry and depends on how well it is cut.
Given that a purpose-made slotted pad costs very little, the puck is a solution to a problem that has already been solved properly. If you use one, use it on a flat frame rail rather than a seam.
Do you actually need one? A short decision
- Bare pinch weld, and you lift the car more than occasionally: yes, buy a slotted pad.
- Bare pinch weld, and you lift it once a year for a tire rotation: worth it, and low stakes either way.
- Factory block fitted and intact: no, and check the blocks are all still there.
- Round lift pad receptacle: yes, and only the model-specific puck.
- Frame rail or axle: no, and if you buy anything, buy a flat pad and not a slotted one.
