Short answer: a scissor jack is a roadside emergency tool for changing one wheel on level ground, and nothing else. A bottle jack is a compact hydraulic ram for tall, high-clearance vehicles with a solid frame to push against. A floor jack is the garage tool, the only one of the three designed for repeated maintenance use, and the only one with the stability and reach to lift a car to working height. They are not three grades of the same product. They lift in different directions and belong under different vehicles. None of the three is a support. Never work under a car supported only by a jack.

The thing the comparison articles miss: the lift path
Most pages that compare these three line them up on capacity, portability and price. Those are real differences, but they are not the one that catches people out.
A floor jack does not lift straight up. Its saddle travels through an arc. The lifting arm is hinged at the back of the chassis, so as it rises, the saddle also moves horizontally, toward the jack. The car, meanwhile, is not moving sideways. Something has to absorb that difference, and on a properly working floor jack the something is the casters: the jack rolls slightly toward the car as it lifts. That is normal and it is by design.
Which produces the practical rules almost nobody states plainly:
- A floor jack needs a hard, flat, uncluttered surface it can roll on. On grass, gravel, soft asphalt or a floor cluttered enough to block the wheels, the jack cannot make its own correction. Instead the saddle drags across the jack point, or the jack tips, or the car shifts. This is the mechanism behind a large share of the "it slipped off" stories.
- Never chock or block a floor jack's wheels. It looks like a safety measure. It is the opposite.
- Bottle and scissor jacks have the opposite problem. They lift straight up, so they do not need to roll, but they also have no way to accommodate the small horizontal movement of the vehicle body as the suspension unloads. That is part of why they feel twitchy under a car, and why a bottle jack wants a genuinely level, solid surface underneath.

Scissor jack: the one in your trunk
The scissor jack that came with the car is a threaded screw between two hinged arms. Turn the screw, the arms close, the jack rises.
What it is for: lifting one corner of that specific vehicle, on level ground, high enough to swap a wheel for the spare, once, so you can drive to a tire shop. That is the whole design brief.
Why it is not a maintenance jack: the base is narrow, the saddle contact area is small, lift height is limited, and it is slow to operate by hand. It also has no meaningful margin designed in for repeated cycles. It is packaged with the car because a car must carry a way to change a wheel, not because it is a good jack.

Bottle jack: the tall one for tall vehicles
A bottle jack is a hydraulic ram standing on end, shaped roughly like a bottle. Pump the handle, the ram extends straight up.
What it is good at: enormous lifting force from a very small package. That combination makes it the sensible choice for pickups, vans and large SUVs, where there is a solid frame rail or axle to push against and plenty of clearance to fit a tall tool underneath.
What it is bad at: low cars, and anything unibody with no frame. A bottle jack has a tall minimum height, so on a normal sedan it often will not fit under the jacking point at all. Its base is small relative to its height, which makes it less forgiving of an out-of-level surface than a floor jack. Its saddle is small, which concentrates load on whatever it touches.
What it must sit on: flat, hard, level ground, with the ram as close to vertical as you can get it. A bottle jack leaning even slightly is a jack loading its ram sideways, which is not what a ram is for.
Floor jack: the garage tool
A floor jack is the long, low, wheeled hydraulic jack. It is the only one of the three built around the assumption that you will use it many times, that you will want the car high enough to work at, and that you will be placing stands afterward.
Its advantages are all consequences of its shape: a long chassis on casters gives it a wide, stable base; a big saddle spreads load across the jack point better than a small one; and the lift range is designed to reach a working height rather than just a wheel-swap height.
Its cost is that it is heavy, it takes garage floor space, and it wants good concrete. If you are choosing one, capacity is the first spec and the least likely to catch you out. Bottle jack vs floor jack vs scissor jack: which should you own?
If you work on your own car at home, a floor jack, plus stands. It is not close. Everything else in this list is a compromise made for portability.
If you drive a truck or a van and want something that lives in the vehicle, a bottle jack. High clearance and a real frame are exactly the conditions it was designed for.
If you drive a sedan or a hatchback and want a spare in the trunk, keep the scissor jack that came with it. It is matched to that vehicle and its one job. Do not upgrade it into a maintenance tool.

The rule that applies to all three
A jack raises a vehicle. Stands, ramps or a lift hold it.
Hydraulic jacks, floor and bottle alike, can bleed down under sustained load without any warning sound. A scissor jack's screw will not bleed down, but its narrow base and small saddle make it easy to tip, which is a faster failure, not a safer one. There is no version of this where a jack becomes a support because it is rated high enough, or because you will only be a minute.
